The town is about 30 miles from Boston, within Essex County. Manchester-by-the-Sea is a residential sea front town, situated on the Atlantic Ocean. Brief History
Manchester was settled by English colonists in 1629 and officially incorporated in 1645.  The area thrived as primarily a fishing community.  In the 1800s, grand summer homes were built along the ocean front and Manchester became the fashionable spot for grand summer living!

In 1989-to avoid confusion with the bigger Manchester in New Hampshire-Manchester, Massachusetts changed its name to Manchester-by-the-Sea.
