Essex

Welcome to Essex!
The town of Essex, Massachusetts, was incorporated in 1819 and is located in Essex County, 26 miles north of Boston. Essex combines both coastal and rural living.  Its historic downtown is famous for its antique stores and seafood restaurants.

Brief History
Essex was previously a part of Ipswich, with the first European settlers arriving in 1634.  Native Americans of the Agawam tribe lived in the area, prior to the European settlement.  Conomo point - the easternmost point of Essex- is named after Masconomo, the chief of the Agawams.  Essex was incorporated as a town in 1819 and became an important center for shipbuilding.  This industry began to decline and ended after World War II. The main sources of income for the town of Essex today are shellfish and tourism, in addition to a thriving antiques market.

Population
3,504, as of the 2010 census.

A Day in Essex
Start the day browsing in its many antique stores.  Take a break and have lunch in one of the seafood restaurants lining Main Street, with lovely vistas of the Essex River.  After lunch, take a cruise on the Essex river in either a rented boat excursion, or on a self-guided kayak tour. For late afternoon, how about a hike? Park outside the Essex County Trail and take a walk in this heavily forested conservation area with its stone walls and the old Manchester road!
