Rockport

Welcome to Rockport!

Rockport, originally a part of Gloucester was incorporated in 1623.  But it was not until 1840 that Rockport separated from Gloucester and became its own distinct town.  Rockport is surrounded on three sides by water.

Population
6,952, as of the 2010 census

Brief History
Native American villages, populated by members of the Agawam tribes inhabited Cape Ann in the beginning. But by the time the permanent settlement of Gloucester was incorporated in 1623, most of the Agawams had died from European diseases.  Vikings are also thought to have explored the area, being the first Europeans to set foot in the Americas.

Early industries consisted of timber and fishing.  Cape Ann at that time had one of the richest fishing areas in all of New England.  Later on Rockport became an important source of granite.  Summer homes were constructed in the 1800s, as visitors flocked to enjoy the long hot days and beautiful ocean views. Rockport also became known for its artists colony in the 1800s, which still thrives today.

A Day in Rockport
Visitors often like to start off at Bear Skin neck.  With scenic ocean views, independently owned stores, restaurants and boutiques, this is a great starting point for getting to know Rockport.

Continue onto the main street with its interesting and diverse stores, as well as the beautifully renovated Shalin-Lu performance center; which attracts musicians and bands from all over the world.

As you meander past all the stores on Main Street, you will arrive at a delightful beach (Front Beach) small but picturesque.  In the opposite direction lies the town's other beach (Old Garden Beach).

Prefer to hike?  Take the 127 to the Halibut Point State Park, located at the northern most tip of Rockport.  This reservation used to be a granite quarry.  The quarry is now full of water and there is a visitors center, hiking trails and rocky outcrops-perfect for picnicking- with incredible ocean views!
