Hamilton

Welcome to Hamilton!
Hamilton is a rural-suburban town in the eastern part of Essex County of Massachusetts. Hamilton was originally a section of Ipswich known as, "The Hamlet."  The town was incorporated in 1793 and named after Alexander Hamilton.  Hamilton has many historic houses, pastoral views, conservation land and an equestrian heritage that dates back to the 1800s.

Brief History
Hamilton was first settled in 1638.  John Winthrop the younger bought most of Essex County from Masconomet, the local chief of the Agawams for the sum of twenty British pounds.  Masconomet was later buried in Hamilton with his gun and tomahawk.  A memorial stone on Sagamore hill marks the spot.  Early English settlers were attracted to the similar landscapes and estates they had left behind in England and farming soon became the main industry of the area. The Myopia Hunt club was formed in the 1800s; the name being initially a joke about the near sightedness of some of its members. It is still going strong today. Sunday afternoons are reserved for polo matches, with the public welcome to attend.

 Population
7,764, as of the 2010 census.

A Day in Hamilton
Start the day with a trip to the Appleton Farms Sanctuary, (Trustees of the Reservation) the country's oldest continuously operating farm. Say hi to the cows, goats, sheep and chickens there.  Meander through the carriage barn, with its antique saddles and bridles.  Then stop by the farm store for a snack, as you take a hike on one of its many trails.  After working up an appetite, head to the downtown grocery store for picnic staples.  Then it's a short drive to Patton Park, named after General S. Patton.  This park has a unique feature; a M4 Sherman tank, donated as a tribute to the general.  Kids love climbing all over it and all the other play structures there.  It's also a great place for a picnic!  If it's Sunday afternoon, head over to the Myopia Hunt club to watch a game of polo.  Members of the public are welcome.  Not Sunday? Consider renting a kayak and paddle your way down the Ipswich river.  After all that activity, you'll be ready for some dinner.  Head to the downtown area again and choose between the 15 Walnut Tavern, the Weathervane Tavern or the Black Cow Tap and Grill.  All excellent choices! Feeling like something more casual, how about a delicious slice of pizza at the Hamilton House of Pizza.
