Welcome to Gloucester!
Gloucester was incorporated as a town in 1642. It is now a city, located on Massachusetts North Shore.  Fishing is its primary industry.  It is also a desirable summer destination, with its historic houses and many beaches. Gloucester consists of an urban heart, with many other outlaying neighborhoods such as East Gloucester, Annisquam, Lanesville, Magnolia and West Gloucester.

Population
28,789 at the 2010 U.S. Census

Brief History
Gloucester was initially founded in 1623 by an expedition chartered by England's James I.  It was one of the earliest English settlements, predating both Salem and Boston. The first settlement only lasted for three years before being abandoned, with people moving to what is modern day Salem, with its more fertile soil.  Then slowly it was re-settled, being incorporated in 1642; taking its name from England's Gloucester.  Initial industries were subsistence farming and a local fishing industry.  It was not until the mid 1800s that Gloucester became the center of the fishing industry in the north shore.
