Ipswich

A charming rural and coastal community with an historic downtown.

Welcome to Ipswich!
Ipswich is a rural and coastal town in the eastern part of Essex County of Massachusetts. It was incorporated in 1634. Ipswich is named after the county of Suffolk, England.

Brief History
Ipswich was founded by John Winthrop, who sailed from England in 1630. That first winter, several hundred people were lost to disease and malnutrition. Winthrop entertained the local Chief Masconomet aboard his ship, the Arbella. Later on, he purchased the town of Ipswich from the chief for the sum of twenty pounds. Early pioneers became fishermen, shipbuilders, farmers, and traders. The last witchcraft trial was probably held in Ipswich in 1878. In this trial, a member of the Christian Science religion was accused of using his mental powers to harm others, including a spinster living in the town.

Population
13,785 as of the 2020 census.

A Day in Ipswich
Start the day in downtown Ipswich with a visit to the Sandpiper Bakery. Pick up a delicious breakfast sandwich, coffee, or fresh pastries, then stroll to the historic downtown to check out the stores and the charming stone bridge. After a hearty breakfast, drive to the Ipswich River sanctuary. You can hike many trails or rent kayaks and enjoy a leisurely paddle on the river.

After all that exertion, it’s time for lunch! Head back to Choate Bridge Pub for some hearty New England Fare with many seafood options. After lunch, it’s time to chill and have a relaxed afternoon at the stunning Crane’s Beach. Enjoy endless miles of golden sand, and epic ocean views. If you’re lucky, you might see some horses galloping in the surf: Horses are permitted on the beach from October 1 through to March 31. Extra fun fact: Several scenes from the last Little Women movie were filmed at Crane’s beach.

Finish up the day at the nearly Castle Inn Estate. Take a guided tour of this magnificent coastal mansion. Then, stroll around the lovely grounds, where more scenes from Little Women were shot.

Finally, it’s time for dinner! Head out to the 1640 Historic Hart House for a meal. You cannot beat it for the atmosphere, good food, and amazing cocktails!
